Choose your oats

Rolled oats are always the right choice. Everything else is a trade-off.

โญ Premium
Woolworths Rolled Oats
Woolworths Foods ยท Selected stores
Slightly thicker and chewier than Jungle Oats, with a nuttier flavour profile. An excellent premium alternative, particularly for people who prefer a heartier, more textured result. The organic variant is also available for a modest price premium.
Where to buy
Woolworths Foods stores only check the cereals and health foods aisle
R32โ€“R48500g premium tier, worth it
๐Ÿ’ฐ Budget
Checkers / PnP House Brand
Various ยท All major stores
House-brand rolled oats perform well in overnight oats and are significantly cheaper than name brands. The texture is slightly less creamy but perfectly acceptable. Ideal for batch prep when you need large quantities affordably.

โฐ Works with care
Instant / Quick Oats
Various brands
Quick oats are more processed (rolled thinner) and produce a mushier, less structured result in overnight oats. They work, but the texture won't be as satisfying. If you only have quick oats, reduce your liquid ratio slightly to compensate.
Important note
Use plain quick oats only avoid flavoured sachets which have added sugar and salt
R18โ€“R28Second choice adjust ratio
๐Ÿ‹๏ธ Advanced
Steel-Cut Oats
Faithful to Nature ยท Woolworths
The least processed oat. Produces a chewy, dense, very hearty result in overnight oats. Requires a minimum 12-hour soak (overnight only no shortcutting). Slightly higher in fibre than rolled oats. For those who like a very textured, nutty breakfast.
Where to buy
Faithful to Nature (online), Woolworths health foods, Wellness Warehouse
R38โ€“R65400g soak minimum 12 hours
๐Ÿšซ Avoid
Flavoured Sachet Oats
Various brands
Flavoured instant oat sachets contain added sugar, salt, artificial flavourings and preservatives. They will throw off every recipe on this site. Always check the ingredients you want: oats. That's it. One ingredient.
Why to avoid
Added sugar disrupts sweetness balance; added salt throws off flavour; artificial flavours overwhelm natural ingredients
Not recommendedFor overnight oats specifically

Choose your liquid

The liquid changes everything. Rooibos changes your oats into a meal.

Reading Labels

What to look for and what to avoid.

The SA supermarket can be overwhelming. Here is exactly what to check on any overnight oats ingredient label before it goes in your jar.

โœ“ Look for these

๐ŸŒพ
Single-ingredient oats
Ingredients list should read: "Rolled oats" or "Oats." Full stop. Nothing else needed or wanted.
๐Ÿฅœ
Natural nut butters
Ingredients: roasted peanuts (or almonds). Oil separation is natural and a sign of quality stir before using.
๐Ÿฅ›
Unsweetened plant milks
Choose "Unsweetened" or "Original" variants. Check the sugar line: should be below 2g per 100ml for unsweetened.
๐Ÿงด
Plain yoghurt / Greek yoghurt
Ingredients: pasteurised milk, live cultures. Protein should be 5g+ per 100g for Greek style. Sugar under 5g per 100g.
๐Ÿฏ
Raw / unprocessed honey
"Raw honey" or "unfiltered honey." Darker honey = more antioxidants. South African varieties from local apiaries are exceptional.

โœ— Avoid these

๐Ÿšซ
Added sugars in oats
Avoid any oats with "sugar," "glucose syrup," "fructose," "dextrose" in the ingredients. Flavoured sachets always contain these.
๐Ÿšซ
Palm oil in nut butters
Palm oil gives peanut butter its spreadable consistency without oil separation but it adds saturated fat and is environmentally problematic.
๐Ÿšซ
Carrageenan in plant milks
A common stabiliser in plant milks linked to gut inflammation in some people. Check for it many brands have removed it in recent years.
๐Ÿšซ
Artificial sweeteners
Sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose or acesulfame K affect gut bacteria negatively. Use raw honey, maple syrup or ripe fruit to sweeten naturally.
๐Ÿšซ
High fructose corn syrup
Sometimes appears in yoghurts, flavoured milks and nut butters marketed as healthy. Check the ingredients every time it is not always obvious.

Which oat works best and why.

Not all oats are equal in overnight oats. The processing level directly affects texture, nutrition and soaking time.

โšก
Quick Oats
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
More thinly rolled than traditional rolled oats. Works in overnight oats but produces a softer, slightly mushy texture. Reduce liquid by 10% to compensate.
Soak time: 4โ€“6 hours. Use less liquid for best results.
๐Ÿ‹๏ธ
Steel-Cut Oats
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
Whole oat groat cut into pieces least processed, nuttiest flavour, chewiest texture. High fibre content. Requires longer soaking; not suitable for rushed prep.
Soak time: 12+ hours minimum. Robust, hearty result.
๐Ÿšซ
Instant Sachets
โ˜…
Heavily processed, flavoured, and loaded with added sugar and salt. Designed for hot cooking in seconds. Not suitable for overnight oats avoid entirely.
Avoid for overnight oats. Use plain rolled oats instead.
