Chocolate Orange Overnight Oats

Chocolate orange overnight oats in a jar topped with yoghurt, orange segments and dark chocolate shavings

Chocolate and orange is a Christmas-stocking classic — that moment you tap the foil ball on the table and it falls into segments. This overnight oats jar turns it into breakfast: rich cocoa oats brightened with fresh orange zest and juice, topped with juicy segments and a few dark chocolate shavings.

It tastes like a treat but runs on real cocoa and whole oranges rather than a chocolate bar. Made the night before, the cocoa deepens and the orange lifts the whole jar — a festive breakfast that feels a little bit special without any effort in the morning.

SA kitchen tip
Use a good cocoa — Bournville or a proper baking cocoa gives a richer chocolate flavour than a sweet drinking-chocolate powder. Zest the orange before you juice it, and add the zest for real citrus lift; the juice alone is subtler. A few shavings from a dark chocolate slab on top beat chocolate chips for that Terry’s-style finish.

Dessert flavour, a genuinely good breakfast.

Chocolate orange tastes like a treat because we know it from the Christmas stocking, but this jar is built on cocoa, whole oranges, oats, chia and yoghurt — not a bar of chocolate. Cocoa powder brings deep chocolate flavour with barely any sugar, and the orange does the rest, so a jar carries a generous 9 grams of fibre and 14 grams of protein for around 360 calories.

Soaking overnight is what turns cocoa-dusted oats into something that actually tastes of chocolate orange. The cocoa hydrates and mellows, the orange infuses through the jar, and by morning every spoon is rich and citrusy at once.

Chocolate orange overnight oats, answered.

Is it actually healthy?
Yes. The chocolate flavour comes from cocoa powder rather than a chocolate bar, so a jar has just a teaspoon of added sweetener and lands around 360 calories with 9 grams of fibre and 14 grams of protein. It is a balanced breakfast that happens to taste like dessert.
Can I use orange juice from a carton?
Fresh is better because you also want the zest, which carries most of the orange flavour. If you only have carton juice, add a little extra and a pinch of zest from any orange you have for the proper chocolate-orange taste.
How do I make it richer or more chocolatey?
Use a proper dark baking cocoa and add an extra half tablespoon, or stir a teaspoon of dark chocolate shavings into the base as well as on top. A pinch of salt also makes the chocolate flavour pop.
Can I prep a batch for the festive week?
Yes. It keeps for up to five days in the fridge — add the fresh orange and chocolate each morning. See our meal prep guide.
