Cranberry & White Chocolate Overnight Oats

Cranberry and white chocolate overnight oats in a glass jar topped with cream, white chocolate curls and cranberries

Cranberry and white chocolate is the flavour that says Christmas without a hint of heavy spice — tart ruby cranberries against sweet, creamy white chocolate. It is the pairing on every festive cookie tin, and it turns a jar of overnight oats into something that feels like a treat but still starts your morning right.

Made the night before, it needs nothing more than a stir in the morning. The cranberries soften just enough overnight, the white chocolate melts into the creamy oats, and a few fresh berries on top keep it bright — perfect for a hot South African December morning.

SA kitchen tip
Dried cranberries live in the baking or dried-fruit aisle at Woolworths, Pick n Pay and Checkers. For the white chocolate, a Nestlé Milkybar or Beacon slab chopped small works perfectly — chopping it fine means it melts into the oats rather than sinking to the bottom. Fresh cranberries are hard to find locally; a handful of frozen or a few extra dried ones on top do the same festive job.

A festive treat that behaves like breakfast.

White chocolate and cranberries feel indulgent, but the jar underneath is honest: wholegrain oats, chia and yoghurt carrying real fibre and protein. The white chocolate is a modest two tablespoons, and the cranberries bring natural tartness that stops the whole thing tasting like a dessert. You get the festive flavour with a breakfast that actually keeps you full to lunch.

The overnight soak matters here. The dried cranberries plump up as they sit, and the finely chopped white chocolate softens into the oats so every spoon has a little sweetness running through it, rather than one big sugary hit on top.

Cranberry and white chocolate overnight oats, answered.

Can I use fresh cranberries?
You can, but fresh cranberries are very tart and hard to find in South Africa. Dried cranberries are sweeter, easier to buy and soften nicely overnight. If you have fresh or frozen ones, use a few on top for colour rather than through the jar.
Is it too sweet for breakfast?
No. With only two tablespoons of white chocolate and the tartness of the cranberries, a jar lands around 370 calories with 13 grams of protein. Skip the optional honey if you prefer it less sweet.
Can I make it dairy-free?
Yes. Use oat or almond milk, a plant-based yoghurt and a dairy-free white chocolate. The result is just as creamy.
Can I prep a batch for the festive week?
Absolutely. It keeps for up to five days in the fridge — add the fresh topping each morning. See our meal prep guide for scaling up.
